The elk or wapiti is the second largest species within the deer family, Cervidae, and one of the largest terrestrial mammals in its native range of North America and Central and East Asia.

New Zealand Elk, known locally as Wapiti, is a subspecies of the North American Elk introduced in 1905 as a gift from U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt to Fiordland National Park for hunting.
